Just Like Other Girls

Just Like Other Girls

I’m just like other girls.

My favourite musician is Taylor Swift, and romantic comedies always make me cry. If I have a choice, I’m always choosing pink. Nothing is more serendipitous to me than accidently matching outfits with someone, and summer dresses have a chokehold on me. I have a box filled with every card or note I’ve ever received. I grew up reading Nancy Drew, The Bell Jar is my favourite book, and now I have a deep affinity for a fictional man named Rhysand. I say ‘like’ when it’s not linguistically necessary. I always order the same thing when I go out, and my perfect day includes Starbucks and a walk through HomeSense. I love being in a group of friends sharing all the juicy details, and I have never not had a crush. I romanticize absolutely everything, and God, how I love being a woman.

When I was young, I didn’t want to be like other girls, because society told me that other girls were silly and low-brow. As a result of this misogynistic nonsense, I am only just now learning how to properly curl my hair. But here is the truth:

I am an amalgamation of every incredible woman I have ever met. So the next time someone says “you’re just like other girls,” my response will be, “thank goodness.”
